In a cross-conference matchup between Alabama State and Southern Methodist University, the Mustangs showed why they’re considered a powerhouse as they dominated Alabama State in a lopsided 76-39 victory. The Mustangs started strong on both sides of the ball, scoring 20 in the 1st quarter while holding the Lady Hornets to just 4 points.
ASU would come roaring back to trim SMU’s lead to just 8 points in the 2nd period before the Mustangs went on a 8-0 run and never looked back, leading by 26 points at halftime. SMU’s win was due to a balanced effort where they saw contributions across the board as multiple players scored in double digits with Savannah Wilkinson leading all scorers with 12 points.
This game was also the debut of dynamic freshman TK Pitts, who had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in 22 minutes of action. Pitts proved to be a force on the offensive boards, grabbing 4 offensive rebounds leading to multiple second-chance opportunities for a team that simply outmatched their opponents.
TK Pitts’ impact on the defensive end was huge and showed signs of things to come. One highlight play was when Pitts stole the ball in the fourth quarter and just outran everyone to turn it into an easy 2 points at the other end, giving SMU their largest lead in the game at 72-34.
The 37 point victory was the largest margin of victory for SMU since 2015 when they defeated Northwestern State 74-36. They improve to 8-2 in their last 10 opening games and look to continue their strong start in their next game against Oklahoma on November 11th, 2022.
